Valentia Skin Care Detoxifying Mask

In my quest to find the perfect all-organic clay facial mask, I tried the Valentia Skin Care Detoxifying Mask.  In the last two weeks, I’ve used it about eight times.  So, how do my results stack up to the claims?

Valentia Detoxifying Mask Claims

This Antioxidant Rich Clay Mask Will:
– Draw out skin impurities
– Improve skin tone
– Reduce pore size
– Firm & strengthen the skin
– Leave skin feeling smoother

My experience vs. the Claims:

So far, it does what it says. In just two weeks, my skin is firmer. Many of my fine lines have dissipated somewhat. It’s also slightly smoother. My pore size has not changed significantly, and I haven’t noticed a change in skin tone; however, with continued use, I’m sure I would see further improvement.  I tried taking some before and after photos, but I don’t think two weeks was long enough to see a noticeable visual change.

Ingredients

These are the only ingredients listed on Amazon (and website) listing at the time of this writing:

– Kaolin Clay
– Plant Stem Cells
– Spirulina
– CoQ10
– Hibiscus & Cranberry Fibers

These are the actual ingredients on box:

It’s a LOT of them, but you’ll notice, they are MOSTLY all natural, and some are organic. None of them are mystery ingredients.  Every ingredient is a well-known entity.

Deionized Aqua (Water), Organic Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera), Kaolin clay, Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate (Vitamin C), Globularia Cordifolia Callus Culture Extract (plant stem cells), PalmitoylOligopeptide, Palmitoyl Tetapeptide-7, UndariaPinnatifida Cell Culture Extract, Ubiquinone (CoQ10), Hibiscus Fibers, Cranberry Fibers, Sodium Magnesium Silicate, Magnesium Aluminum Silicate, Cellulose Gum, Purified Smectite Clay, Cranberry Fragrance, Haematococcus Pluvialis extract (Astaxanthin), Organic Rosa Canina (Rosehip Seed Oil), Wildcrafted Panax Ginseng, Wildcrafted Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea), Arctostaphylos Uva Ursi (Bearberry), Organic Vaccinium Macrocarpon (Cranberry extract), Organic Viola Tricolor (Violet), Wildcrafted Prunus Virginiana (Wild Cherry), Punica Granatum (Pomegranate), Vaccinium Angustifolium (Blueberry), Citrus Limon (Lemon Essential Oil), Organic Rheum Palmatum (Rhubarb), Phenoxyethanol, Ethyl Hexyl Glycerin, Spirulina Maxima (Spirulina), Macrocystis Pyrifera (Kelp), Vitis Vinifera (Grape Seed Oil), Organic Centella Asiatica (Gotu Kola), Wildcrafted Equisetum Arvense (Horsetail), WildcraftedTaraxacumOfficinale (Dandelion), Wildcrafted Geranium Maculatum (Wild Geranium), Kosher Vegetable Glycerin, Butylene Glycol, Carbomer, Polysorbate 20, Sucrose Stearate, Polyglyceryl-10 Laurate, Lecithin, Tocopherol

Directions for using Valentia Skin Detoxifying Clay Mask:

Me wearing Valentia Clay Mask – When it looks like this, wash it off – Hint, try to keep it off your clothes. It doesn’t stain but looks unsightly in photos.

Valentia Skin Detoxifying Clay Mask is easy to use.  You only cover your face and neck.  Let it sit till it dries (about 15-20 minutes), and then remove it with a warm, wet cloth in a circular motion.  The natural plant ingredients give it a slightly gritty texture which helps exfoliate dead skin cells.

Pros:

You can smell the cranberries and hibiscus! It smells like my favorite hibiscus tea. The aroma is slightly sweet and tart at the same time.

When you apply it, it has a nice tingle. I love that feeling. Sometimes, it leaves my skin a bit pink. The discoloration always clears up within about 30 minutes, and I have not had any breakouts.

It’s Vegan. CoQ10 and lecithin are sometimes derived from non-vegetarian sources. This one sources from vegan sources.

It’s cruelty-free. I don’t need some poor bunny rabbit tortured for my beauty needs. I am just not that selfish.

Bonus feature! It exfoliates!

Cons:

Not All-Natural: I was a little disappointed to find that the full ingredient list was not disclosed on this Amazon listing and thought the product was all natural based on its description. However, after re-reading the listing, nowhere does it say that it is all natural or organic. I typically don’t use anything but all natural/organic beauty products.  Despite this, I decided to try it since the non-natural additives are considered safe.

The mask contains Polysorbate 20, Butylene Glycol, and Polyglyceryl-10 Laurate – which have all been approved for safe use in cosmetics – but are definitely not natural. If I had seen the full ingredient list, I probably wouldn’t have accepted it when they sent me a free sample in exchange for an honest review. However, if you use conventional OTC cosmetics, hairsprays, lotions, and a myriad of other things, this shouldn’t concern you at all. Don’t panic – but these are extremely common ingredients – considered so safe that you find some of them in food. This face mask is far superior to almost anything you will find on the drug store shelf. Many of the ingredients are organic, and most of them are natural. That’s a bold claim compared to most things some people put on their face without a second thought.

In addition to Kaolin Clay, it also contains Sodium Magnesium Silicate which is a synthetic silicate clay.

While the mask has cranberry fibers, I also see “Cranberry Fragrance” listed, but no specification as to whether it’s natural.

Incomplete instructions on the box: I’ve used this about four times a week for the last two weeks. Unfortunately, it doesn’t say on the box how often to use it. Today, I discovered you should use it two times a week for oily skin and one time a week for dry.  However, I didn’t suffer any ill effects, so am no worse the wear.

Overall Impression

If you typically use brand name non-organic skin care products from the drugstore, you will likely be very pleased with this product.  My skin feels great after two weeks (even though I overdid it a bit).   It outranks almost any non-organic mask I’ve tried.  Most of the ingredients are natural, and many are organic.
