I don’t know where I would be without my fitness apps. When I need motivation, these apps are there. They help me track my fitness, keep up with my food and intake, help others, and even earn real-life tangible merchandise. Here are my top five faves.
MyFitnessPal
Due to its versatility, user-friendliness, and usability, MyFitnessPal is my absolute favorite of all the fitness apps. Available on iTunes and Android
- Analyze recipes – Either bulk import from your favorite recipe website or manually enter your ingredients. Double check for accuracy and MyFitnessPal computes your recipe’s nutritional content. I love this app so much that I use it for all the recipe’s on this site.
- Track your food intake – quickly scan the barcode on your favorite food to add it to your daily intake. Also, this fitness app recently added restaurant food! When you check into your favorite chain, click the location icon, and it will pull up the menu with all the nutritional information. I like to use this before I order so I can better plan my meals.
- Track your water. Every time you drink a glass of water, just click the button to add another serving. Easy!
- Track workouts. You can either track your workouts manually (having MyFitnessPal estimate your caloric burn) or sync with your favorite wearable.
Charity Miles
Available on iTunes and Android
Choose your charity. Take your phone with you. The app tracks your steps and donates to your chosen charity based on your steps. It’s advertising supported and, while each walk or run only earns pennies, those few cents from many people add up quickly. It doesn’t cost you a dime but may encourage you to shake your tail-feathers for your favorite cause. I don’t even own a cell phone, and cannot carry my tablet every step, so I wish it would pair with my Fitbit instead.
SworkIt Personalized Workouts
Available on iTunes and Android
Enter your personal information and goals into the SworkIt app. Pick the type of workout you want to do. Tell the app how long you have to exercise. SworkIt delivers a good workout that meets your requirements to help you achieve your goals. I love this idea for people that want to workout at home, but don’t really have an idea of where to start. SworkIt has both free and paid plans.
Fitbit Fitness Apps
Available on iTunes and Android
Did you know that you can use the Fitbit app without having to have the device? This fitness app uses your phone to track your steps. Fitbit then syncs with MyFitnessPal (or a myriad of other health and fitness apps) to tell MyFitnessPal how many steps you took. This feature is handy for the next app!
Walgreen’s Balance Rewards
Register at Walgreens.com/healthychoices. You can either enter your progress on the website, or automagically track when you sync with a variety of popular fitness apps and devices, including scales, apps, wearables, and blood pressure monitors. Earn points for tracking exercise, blood pressure, glucose, and NRT Quit Smoking Programs. Set goals to get more exercise, reduce stress, eat better, be happier. Set goals to manage heart health, diabetes, and asthma. Earn points to receive money off any single purchase. For example, when you earn $10, you can buy a $10 item for free!

August 3, 2016 - 3:19 pmI wish it would sync with an activity tracker – or MFP – then I’d use it more, too! It’s a great way to raise money for you favorite cause – and motivate yourself.

August 3, 2016 - 3:27 pmMapMyRun syncs with MFP, too! I think they are both owned by UnderArmor. I’m not a runner, but it’s a great app.
